A folder in Ettex is one place a file sits in — and it is the same folder everywhere. File a document from Storage and it is filed in Documents as well; the folder list, the counts and the filter all come from one shared record that syncs with the rest of your account.
Create a folder
- Open Files. In the left rail, find the Folders section and press +. You can also use New folder in the welcome card at the top of the list.
- Type a name and press Create. The folder appears in the rail straight away, with a counter that stays at 0 until you put something in it.
- Names are unique: if a folder with that name already exists, Ettex says so instead of creating a second one.
An empty folder is kept. You can set up your structure first and file things into it later.
Put a file in a folder
- Hover the file and open its ⋯ menu, then choose Move to folder.
- Pick a folder from the list, or type a new name in the field below to create one and move the file in a single step.
- Press Move. The counter next to the folder goes up and the file is filed.
To take a file out again, open Move to folder and pick No folder — the file stays exactly where it is, it just stops belonging to that folder.
See what is in a folder
Click a folder in the rail and the list narrows to it. The name of the folder becomes the list heading, and a chip appears in the filter row so it is obvious why you are seeing fewer files than usual — remove the chip, press the folder again, or use Clear all to go back.
The folder is part of the address, so a link to a folder can be bookmarked or shared, and the browser's back button returns you where you were.
Rename or delete a folder
- Hover the folder in the rail and open its ⋯ menu.
- Rename changes the name everywhere at once — files stay in it and the filter follows the new name.
- Delete folder removes only the folder. The files inside stay untouched and simply stop belonging to it, which is why the confirmation says so explicitly.
Folders in Documents
Documents has the same Folders section in its left rail, below Projects. Move a document into a folder there and it is filed in Storage too — one record, two places to work with it.
Folders and projects are not the same thing
- A folder is where something is filed. One file, one folder — like a shelf.
- A project is what a piece of work belongs to, spanning documents, sheets, tasks and more. It is a label, not a location.
- Favorites are neither — they are your personal shortlist, and a file can be starred whatever folder it sits in.
Use folders when you want a stable place for something, and projects when you want everything about one piece of work in a single view.
